What is the Academic Bank of Credit?

The Academic Bank of Credit (ABC) is a centralized digital repository of academic credits earned by students from various higher education institutions in India. It will act as a credit bank, where students can accumulate credits earned from multiple institutions and programs over their academic journey. These credits can be transferred across institutions and courses, allowing students to design their own educational pathways and careers.

The ABC will allow students to earn academic credits for various learning activities such as online courses, internships, research, and community engagement, and store them in the credit bank. These credits can then be used to meet the requirements of the degrees, diplomas, or certificates offered by universities or institutions. This system will help students in achieving an academic degree or diploma at their own pace and convenience.

How will the Academic Bank of Credit work?

The Academic Bank of Credit in NEP India will function as a centralized platform that will capture, store and manage academic credits earned by students. Institutions will be required to submit the details of the courses, syllabi, and assessment criteria to the ABC portal. The portal will also allow students to access their academic records and credits earned from various institutions in a digital format.

The ABC will maintain a transparent and credible credit system, ensuring that students receive appropriate recognition for their academic achievements. The credit system will be designed in a way that promotes interdisciplinary learning, flexible academic pathways, and lifelong learning. The ABC will also ensure that the credit transfer is seamless and secure, minimizing the administrative and financial burden on students.

Recent Developments in implementation

Starting from 2023, students seeking admission in universities across the country will be required to open a mandatory Academic Bank of Credit (ABC) account at abc.gov.in. The online generation of ABC accounts has already begun, but students have reportedly faced difficulties with the Aadhaar verification process during account creation. In a meeting on February 14, 2023, the University Grants Commission (UGC) chairman M. Jagadesh Kumar called upon vice chancellors to ensure 100 percent registration on the ABC portal for the upcoming 2023-24 academic year as part of the implementation of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020.

The ABC platform serves as a virtual database of academic credits earned by students stored online, and it will help ensure credit transfer, making it easier for students to switch across different streams and institutions for higher academics. However, the progress in student registration on the ABC platform has been hindered by aadhar-related issues, as many students do not have their mobile numbers linked to their aadhaar. While some universities have reported progress, others have highlighted problems in ABC registrations. For instance, the Vice Chancellor of Central University of Tamil Nadu stated that about 70 percent of students from the university have registered on the ABC platform, but the remaining 30 percent have faced difficulties with registration due to OTP-linked issues.

The ABC platform is crucial in implementing the NEP 2020 provisions like dual degree, joint degree, and twinning programs. To this end, the UGC has urged universities to offer up to 40 percent of the courses in any program online on SWAYAM, the central government’s Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) platform. The credits earned through these courses will also be stored on the ABC platform. During the meeting with VCs, the UGC Chairman sought a brief report on any technical problems universities are facing regarding ABC implementation, emphasizing the need to onboard all students in central universities on the ABC platform in the upcoming academic year. Students will require a unique ABC ID to get admission from this year onward.

Conclusion

The Academic Bank of Credit in NEP India is a significant step towards making higher education accessible, flexible, and lifelong for students in India. It will enable students to earn academic credits from multiple institutions and use them to design their academic pathways. The ABC will promote standardization, quality assurance, and lifelong learning, providing students with greater opportunities for personal and professional growth. The ABC is a game-changer in the Indian education system
